Of course, no mention of "GE switchers and Shortlines" would be complete without an obligatory M&ET shot. It's often line-ball between an industry which runs a 44-tonner over purchasing a larger Trackmobile, with "we already own-it, and it's not-dead-yet" budget considerations typically being the final arbiter. GE 44 and 70 tonners : More frequently seen in "Shortline + Museum" mixed RR operations and "industry-owned switcher" roles in the 2000s-era. The S2 and S4 turbo-charged versions arguably "ride better" with the AAR trucks, but equally are more-commonly sidelined by a "blown turbo" failure. Alexander Railroad comes to mind as one "hold-out" in the mid-sized shortline world. S-series Alco switchers (S1 thru S4) : older Alcos which have "a cult following" on some smaller shortlines, and seem to hang-on in "industry-owned switcher" roles. Is it just me, or does this pic look look for-all-the-world like the end of a peninsular, or a 4x8? With CCT, Alexander, IHB, and NCIR among others, some to mind. SW1500s : I'm right there with you, the massive fleet of ex-SP SW1500s ("cruds")Īs well as SW1000s and 1500s from other "first purchaser railroads" live on all over the place, Hmmm, interesting mix of locos there, covering a wide range of eras and "shortline flavours". Much of the traffic to this site comes through google searches, so we retitled this thread to make it more descriptive. MRH: One word titles don’t do well in search and they don’t tell you squat if the title does come up in a search. I heard Atlas re-released S2's sound etc, but sold out cant find em. they seem to sputter and have that annoying gear noise. My dilemma is deciding on locomotive power, I've always been drawn to SW1500, S2, S4, GE44 TONNERS, 70 TONNERS, S1, MP15, short line atmosphere, however I have some Atlas RS11, GP38 that run smooth and far more reliably than my yellow box Atlas S2 S4 that I converted to DCC, are modern versions of these locos smooth and reliable? I have not had much luck with Bachman 44 or 70 tonners. My layout is short line real-estate, the room is a small 7x 16 around the walls 4 industries to switch if the mood strikes.27inch radius, #6 Peco turnouts, code 83
